The South Orangetown Middle School National Junior Honor Society inducted 112 seventh-graders and honored its 104 current eighth-grade members in a ceremony in the SOMS auditorium this evening. The SOMS Jazz Band, with members of the SOMS Concert Band, performed under the direction of music teacher Janice Tocco.
Honor society membership is based on five “pillars”: scholarship, service, leadership, citizenship and character. Over the course of the school year, NJHS members raised $4,540 for the Hi Tor Animal Care Center, in memory of Cottage Lane Elementary School teacher Paul Doctor, through a series of fundraising events designed to bring their school community together to help our local community.
“You are and will continue to be the leaders in our building,” Principal Dr. Chad Corey told current members and inductees during his welcoming remarks. “Through NJHS, you have many opportunities to experience the power of collective effort.”
Hi Tor volunteer Steve Harris accepted the NJHS donation on behalf of the organization. “I’m completely overwhelmed by what you’ve done. It’s tremendous and heartwarming…the efforts you’ve made help feed our animals, keep them healthy and keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. We thank you so much!”
Congratulations to all 216 SOMS NJHS members and advisors Kristine Condon and Jill Rutherford!
