With great eagerness and excitement I look forward to meeting all of you and getting back to teaching!
I can’t wait to find out more about you. In this space I want to tell you a bit about me; since you may be wondering what your fourth grade teacher is like.
I was born in Illinois; the youngest of nine children! My home town was a lot like Pearl River: 15,000 people, commuter train to the city (Chicago), and about the same distance from Chicago as Pearl River is from Manhattan.
I joined the Navy right out of high school. I was on active duty for nine years. That means it was a full time job and it was the place where I lived; either on base or on ships. During those nine years they stationed me on three ships and one shore station. While I was in the Navy, I visited my sister in Connecticut and met a lady from Piermont at my brother’s engagement party. We eventually were married. So, after active duty I came here and have been here ever since 1990.
I was in the Naval Reserves for an additional 11 years after that. My unit drilled at Fort Schuyler in the Bronx. In the reserves we would go in for one weekend a month and do one active duty stint for two weeks each year. Usually that was in the summer, but once I went to Egypt in September, during the school year. That year I met my class and then had to go away for 2 1/2 weeks. That won’t happen again because I retired from the Navy in 2001.
I spent 3 1/2 years on this kind of ship. It carries up to 300 marines.
I have been teaching for 29 years now. This will be my 30th year! All of those years were right here at Cottage Lane. I have taught every subject. I feel like I’ve seen and heard everything that kids can come up with, and then a new year with a new batch of children comes in and I learn all new things. That means I know all of the tricks of the trade to inspire you, equip you and help you in every way. I love my job!
It’s going to be a great year. I just know it!
