Olympics Medal Count
Here is the address for the medal standings at the Olympics, http://www.sochi2014.com/en/medal-standings. In class we talked about how you need to be a great mathematician to study this chart. Can you make some interesting number sentences using the information from the chart? You can add, subtract or even do both. After writing the equation, explain how you created it. For example, 5-2 = 3. Germany won 5 Bronze medals and Switzerland won 2 Bronze medals. Germany won three more than Switzerland. Just click on the chart below to see the final medal standing for the first seven countries. [nggallery id=18]
2014 Winter Olympics
Tomorrow will be the last day of the Winter Olympics! I wonder how many of you have watched it and have some interesting news to report to the class on Monday. I have done a little research to answer some of my own questions. I wondered why there are 5 rings on the Olympic emblem and why they are always blue, yellow, black, green, red and white. Well, the five rings stand for the five continents that the athletes come from; Asia, Africa, Europe, North America and South America. The six colors are those that appear on all the national flags.

Groundhog Day
There is a legend that says a few hundred years ago Europeans brought Ground Hog Day to America. They said that the ground hog wakes up from his hibernation on February 2. (February 2 is half way between winter and spring.) If he comes up from his hole and it is sunny, he will see his shadow and be frightened. If he sees his shadow, there will be 6 more weeks of winter weather. But if he comes up and the sky is cloudy, he will not see his shadow and will not be frightened. Then spring weather will come very soon. On Friday we made predictions of what we thought would happen on Groundhog Day and we made a graph. 15 children thought the ground hog would NOT see his shadow and 6 thought he would. We figured out using subtraction that 9 MORE children thought the Groundhog would not see his shadow. The subtraction sentence was 15-6=9.

All About Gibbons
Sophia’s dad, Mr. Terleph, was kind enough to come and share with us all he knows about gibbons and other creatures that live in the rain forests of Thailand. We watched a great power point presentation and even got to hear the cool sound that gibbons make when they are communicating with one another. Thank you so much Mr. Terleph for sharing your knowledge with us! I know it has been a few days, but can anyone remember one fact they learned? Please reply and we can find out what we have all learned. [nggallery id=16]

Hello in Many Languages
Our curiosity has been peeked after the December parent visits. We learned to say hello in three languages. Alek taught us that hello is parev in Armenian. Anita shared that helo is they way to say hello in Hungarian. Finally, Ali taught that merhaba is the way to say hello in the Turkish language. We were hoping that we could add to this international list! Please leave a reply if you know how to say hello in another language.
