Where’s the American Flag?

This past week we began talking about the American Flag. As good citizens it is important that we know about our countries symbols. Did you know that the first official American flag was displayed on June 14, 1777? Wow, that was a long time ago! The current American flag (50 stars and 13 stripes) was displayed for the first time on July 4, 1960. So… I thought it might be fun to go on a search for the American flag. As you are out and about this weekend, count how many American flags you see. It would be interesting to know where you saw at least one of them. Write a comment and we will share your evidence with the class on Tuesday.

  1. When I was driving to the Bronx Zoo today, I saw a bunch of American flags. The one I liked the most was on the “left coast lifter”, which is one of the largest floating cranes. I saw it while crossing the Tappan Zee bridge.

  2. Today I saw 22 flags! I couldn’t believe I saw that many in one day. Two of them were in front of fire stations and three of them were in front of schools. I am going to search for more tomorrow. I hope I find a huge one just like Mikaela.

  3. I just read the email that you sent my family last night, so I didn’t get to count any American flags. Next weekend, I will count some American flags, and then I will leave another comment.

  4. There are two houses on my street that have a flag pole flying the American Flag between them. And my soccer games were at the field next to school, so I saw the American flag outside of our school. Also, it wasn’t this weekend, but I saw a really, really big American Flag hung up on a huge crane outside of Carousel Cakes in Nanuet. It was huge! and Giant.

  5. I found 3 flags. One was right on top of the George Washington bridge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We went to a corn maze.Guess what I saw when we looked at the design and it was the American Flag!!Well I was in the maze there was a sign that had American Flag.

  6. There’s one sticking out of a plant in our kitchen (along with an Irish and an Italian flag). The American flag is in the center and higher than the other two. Mom says it has to be like that because we are Americans first! There’s also one down the block from us on Western Highway. It’s high up! The high school and the fire department and police department have them flying high too!

    • Dear Mark,
Great detective work! I am so glad to hear you have an American flag in your kitchen. How are the Irish flag and the Italian flag alike? I hope you answer.
