KINDNESS

Each month, children from different classes teach the school about our ‘word of the month’. In February, the word of the month was kindness. Click on the link below to enjoy some snippets from our performance:

Kindness Pledge

I pledge to myself, on this day,
To try to be kind in every way.
To every person, big and small,
I will help them if they fall.
When I’m kind to me and you,
That is the best that I can do!

Persistence!!

per•sis•tence

noun

: the quality that allows someone to continue doing something or trying to do something even though it is difficult or opposed by other people

Why ants? They are hard workers! They never give up! They teach us to view things from their perspective! And ants overcome obstacles! Persistence, ant style! When the going gets tough, ants keep going! Watch this short clip from National Geographic as Dr. Nigel Franks monitors how hard individual ants work by gluing tracking chips to them.

Just what makes that little old ant
Think he’ll move that rubber tree plant
Anyone knows an ant, can’t
Move a rubber tree plant

But he’s got high hopes, he’s got high hopes
He’s got high apple pie, in the sky hopes

Two Bad Ants by Chris Van Allsburg

When an ant scout returns home with a mysterious crystal, the queen ant decides it is the most delicious food she has ever tasted. That evening the other ants, wishing to make the queen happy, set off on a journey to fetch home as many of these crystals as they can carry. The journey is a dangerous one. Following the scout, the ants travel through the “forest” to the “mountain” they must climb in order to reach the treasure they seek.

Below is a fun little animation that illustrates persistence!

A Peep into History

For the past nine years, the Washington Post sponsors a contest for its readers. Readers create a diorama of a famous scene in history or in current events. The one rule is that all the characters in the diorama must be played by Peeps (chicks or bunnies).

This year William O. Schaefer will be having their very own contest!

Go to Ms.Eyer’s blog to learn more about the contest!

Good Luck Peeps!

Socktober!

Every night in the United States an estimated 600,000 people live on the streets. This October, SoulPancake and Kid President want 2 million people to prove that even the smallest acts of love, like donating a pair of socks, can make a big difference in the lives of our neighbors who are homeless.

Socktober was launched by Kid President creator Brad Montague four years ago. It’s a movement to get kids and grown-ups to help the homeless in an easy, fun way.

Last year, more than 10,000 schools, families, businesses, and churches rallied together to bring Socktober to life. People from every state and continent have taken part in Socktober! This year, William O. Schaefer is participating and we are having a “Sock Drive” the last week in October!

All of the socks we collect as a community will be donated to a local shelter.
