Let’s Code!

Many schools are teaching students about codes.  Even the President of the United States wants you to code.

When you hear codes you think of computers.  Learning basic programming isn't just a smart idea it. Learning how to build simple websites and games helps kids design, develop logic and problem-solving skills, and be creative.

However, codes have been around for a very long time.   I loved secret codes when I was a kid. The ability to write a coded letter for a classmate was so much fun.  Any time you have extra time, consider writing a message in “code.” Post it to this blog page.

Morse Code – This is a way of sending information as a series of on-off tones, lights, or clicks.

reversethe word

Reverse the Words – This is a simple code to solve – just read the words backwards! Even though it seems simple once you know the secret, it can be a hard one to figure out when you don’t.

ReverseAlphabet

Reversed Alphabet – Write out the letters from A to M then write the letters from N to Z directly below them.

gridcode GridA grid secret code is easy to set-up, and is great practice for using coordinates, too. Each letter is represented by a row letter (A-E) and a column number (1-5). Two letters have to share a space – I chose I and J, since they would not be easily confused in a word. We found that grid codes take a little extra time to write, but are quick to solve.
everyotherletter Read Every Second Letter –  Read every second letter starting at the first letter, and when you finish, start again on the letters you missed.
nauticalflags

Nautical Flags – Or the International Code of Signals (ICS) is a system of signals and codes for ships to communicate important messages. The flags help ships to communicate in situations, especially when there are different languages.

cipherdisk Cipher Disk – To encrypt text: turn inner disk to set code. For each letter: find it in outer ring and replace it with letter in inner ring. To decrypt text: turn inner disk to set right code. For each letter: find it in inner ring and replace it with letter in outer ring.
pigpen1 PigPen – The PigPen code is easier than it looks and is my children’s favorite. First, draw out the two grids below and fill in the letters.
CodesRockQR QR CodesA QR Code is a two-dimensional barcode. An app can decode it and read what you want to say.
CODING – Computer programming is writing codes for computers. It is fun because you are always challenged with new problems and you can bring your ideas to life! We will try two apps to help us write code. Kodable & Daisy the Dinosaur

Szkkb Xlwrmt! (That’s “Happy coding!” in reverse alphabet!)

Leave a coded message for someone on our blog.  If there is one posted.  You can solve someone's too!
