This year the PARP program selected E.B. White’s classic novel, Charlotte’s Web, as the shared reading book for our community.  Over the next few weeks, we will be reading and engaging in conversations about this awesome book.  To support these efforts, this month’s challenge relates to Charlotte’s Web.

In Charlotte’s Web there is a character named Fern.  Fern is a little girl in the story who cares a lot about Wilbur’s fate. Fern adds layers of humanity that connects with readers.  She also reminds me of Temple Grandin.  Temple is an American professor of animal science at Colorado State University, consultant to the livestock industry on animal behavior, and autism spokesperson.  She is well-known for supporting the humane treatment of animals. Her visual thinking was a tremendous asset in designing livestock facilities.  She worked hard on improving how animals are treated.  Here is one of her TedTalks – The World Needs All Kinds of Minds.

We need your mind to design a perfect pigpen for Wilbur. Consider his physical, social, and emotional needs. Be sure to label any special features of the  pigpen.  We suggest you use a shoebox.

Reminders:
1. One entry per student.
2. All entries must have a submission form attached – Charlotte Web’s Challenge
3. Please write your name and your teacher’s name on your creation.
4. We encourage family members to support and guide the children through this process while letting them take the lead on creating something new.
5. All entries are DUE Monday, February 24!
