PENTOMINOES

The word “pentomino” was coined by Solomon Golomb in the 1950s. A pentomino is the shape formed by hinging five squares together. There are only twelve different shapes possible. They can be constructed by joining five squares together so that they each have at least one edge in full contact with one of the other squares. There are 2339 solutions to the 10 x 6 puzzle, 1010 solutions to the 12 x 5 puzzle, 368 solutions to the 15 x 4 puzzle, and only 2 solutions to the 20 x 3 puzzle.
