His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales

Prince Charles, His Royal Highness Prince of Wales listening to his introduction.

HRH The Prince of Wales is another name for Prince Charles, the son of the Queen of England. Last Saturday, he was visiting South Africa. My husband and I were invited to his talk. Since he will someday be the King of England (when his mommy leaves the throne), people pay attention to him and listen to what he has to say. Newspapers write about him on the front page of their papers, and reporters from TV news channels want sound clips to put on the evening news.

Prince Charles about to begin his talk on sustainable development and taking care of the planet.

That’s good, because Prince Charles talked about a very important topic – sustainable development. Some of you 5th graders may remember this concept from 4th grade science. It’s the idea that we need to be careful how we use our natural resources, such as trees, minerals from under the ground, and fish in the oceans. Since there are now so many people in the world (over 7 billion!), if we’re not careful we’ll run out of our natural resources.

We need to plan, conserve, and look for different ways to create energy and produce our food. While we’re doing this, we also need to look after our environment so we have clean water, air and soil to enableĀ all living thingsĀ to live healthy lives. This is important, don’t you think?

The lecture was given at the University of Cape Town. We could take pictures before and after the speech, but not during the speech, so people would listen to the speech and not get distracted. Before Prince Charles arrived, the university choir sang for the audience. They’re good, don’t you think? It was a memorable afternoon.

  1. Did you shake hands with the Prince of Wales? I like the topic he was talking about at the conference. I think every country should have a law on sustainible development.

    • Unfortunately, we did not get to shake his hand. Yes, it’s important for everyone to learn as much as possible about sustainable development. Our future depends on it!
