Hi, families (and students)!

As you all know, we are working hard to GROW our thinking while we read. We don’t just zoom through books … we read a lot each day, and we pay attention to what the author does, thinking things like, “How does this detail support my ideas about the main character?” and “Why might the author have chosen to include this setting?”

While you read at home, keep these great strategies in mind:

-Stop when a character struggles and think: What is the character learning? What life lesson might this book be teaching?

-Pay attention to how minor characters impact/influence the main character

NOTICE HOW CHARACTERS CHANGE –> think back to what might have caused the change (this is an important one!)

-Wonder about character motivation: why does the character do what they do? What does the character want?

Keeping track of your thinking (post it notes, thinking maps, journal entries) is also a great practice to support you as you grow your thinking. Keep working hard!
