What You See is What You Get

Directions:

Part I: Interpret images as if you were the reporter covering the story in order to demonstrate that certain elements of bias are linked directly to the experiences that shape our lives. People often have very different things to say in regards to the same events, and in the case of news reporting many times the same events will be described from radically different perspectives. Take a look at the series of images below and describe what you see happening in your own words, do you think your interpretation could differ from someone else’s?

Part II: Now that you’ve analyzed both pictures. You will have the entire period today and tomorrow to complete your newspaper article about ONE of the images below (you may choose which picture you would like to write about). You must use this newspaper template and share it with dcastellano@socsd.org in order to earn credit.

Questions to Consider:

  1. How would you describe the events you perceive to be taking place?
  2. What social issues might be this image be addressing?
  3. How does this image make you feel? Offer your interpretation of it’s significance.
  4. How does your “report” differ from those around you? Discus what may have led to these differences?
