Every year September 21st is Peace Day! And we can celebrate it with Pinwheels for Peace!
In today’s world, peace needs to be more than just a word.
Imagine… millions of pinwheels spinning in the wind – pinwheels in the United States, Great Britain, South America, Australia, the Middle East, Canada, Africa, Europe and Asia; pinwheels all over the world! – big pinwheels, small pinwheels; pinwheels of all shapes and sizes – colorful pinwheels, decorated with drawings, paintings, collages, photographs – pinwheels with words of peace and harmony written on them – fields of pinwheels, pinwheels along roadsides, in schoolyards, in parks, pinwheels EVERYWHERE!
This is the Pinwheels for Peace project!
Please join us EVERY year on International Day of Peace, September 21st, as we create a visual public statement about peace!

On September 11th horrific events occurred, yet through the simple text and vibrant art of first graders, we are reminded that the world continued the next day. On each page, children experience the comforts of ordinary routines, such as their teacher reading books to them, having homework and recess, and knowing that 2 + 2 still equals 4. This is a poignant message of hope that reassures us all that even after bad things happen, tomorrow always brings a new day.

Nooooo…we didn’t have First Day Jitters today!! We had a great day!! It was even Teddy’s birthday today!!! What a great birthday present that is!!! Soooo Super Exciting…can’t wait for the September birthday celebration to sing to all of our September birthdays!!
Today we got to know each other in Morning Meeting, took care of all of our supplies, read “The Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Spider” to a partner, and we even read for 12 minutes (mayyyybe even 15!) quietly and intently! We also came up with a great set of rules together as a community!! What a great day!
Here are a few highlights of our first day of school:
