Enrichments 2023-2024

Updated as of August 21, 2023: Cottage Lane Elementary School provides several opportunities for students to participate in different Enrichments throughout the school year. Enrichment descriptions and registration information can be found below.

The trimesters will run according to the following schedule:

  • October 2 – December 15
  • January 2 – March 14
  • March 18 – June 7

Enrichment timeframes, which will remain the same throughout the entire school year, will be as follows:

  • AM Enrichment: 8:00am – 8:40am
  • PM Enrichment: 3:50pm – 4:30pm

Enrichment teachers will communicate with families on the specifics of your child’s registration (Trimester, Day, AM/PM, Time). We have a rolling admission process for Enrichments and students will be waitlisted if registration is full. If a student drops an Enrichment, the next family on the waitlist will be contacted to join, as long as they are not already scheduled for three enrichment(s).

Please complete the registration form by Friday, September 8th. Registration opens on Thursday, August 24th. 

Grade 3

Chess Enrichment (Grade 3) – Friday AM – Trimesters 1, 2 & 3
Chess is open to all third graders, from those who have never played before to experienced Grandmasters–and everyone in between! Students battle on a weekly basis against each other in chess. Chess will meet every Friday morning that school is in session.

Competition Chess (Grades 3,4,5) – Monday AM  – Trimesters 1, 2 & 3
Students will prepare and participate in competitions in school. This is a more competitive enrichment. We now have chess clocks!

Creative Writing (Grades 3,4,5) – Thursday PM  – Trimesters 1 & 2
This is a creative writing experience where students will dive into storytelling and bond with other enthusiastic young authors. Students will explore fantasy, mystery, adventure and magical realism. They will keep a portfolio of their work and share their favorites with an audience of fellow writers.

Graphic Novels (Grade 3) – Tuesday AM – Trimester 1
Students will focus on writing and creating Graphic Novels by exploring the overlap of storytelling and drawing.

In-Line Skating (Grades 3,4,5) – Wednesday AM – Trimesters 1 & 2
In-line skating is a lifetime activity with many benefits. It is a fun and safe way to improve balance and strength. Skating raises your heartrate and provides an excellent fitness workout.

Journaling (Grades 3,4,5) – Tuesday AM  – Trimester 1
Students will learn the many benefits of keeping a journal. Students will apply their knowledge of creative writing to journaling and explore new writing skills, techniques and strategies.

Language Lab – French (Grades 3,4,5) – Friday AM – Trimester 1
The purpose of the language lab is to provide students a platform to learn/enhance foreign language skills such as French and Spanish through meaningful and engaging activities.

Language Lab – Spanish (Grades 3,4,5) – Tuesday AM – Trimesters 1 & 2
The purpose of the language lab is to provide students a platform to learn/enhance foreign language skills such as French and Spanish through meaningful and engaging activities.

Lego Master Builders (Grades 3,4,5) – Tuesday AM – Trimesters 1 & 2
LEGO Master Builders: In the LEGO Master Builders Enrichment, students work cooperatively on projects both big and small! Students will apply STEM concepts and basics of engineering to structured creations and use their imaginations to create unstructured designs. LEGO Master Builders helps students grow their self-confidence, build teamwork skills, and foster their creativity.

Mindful Coloring (Grades 3,4,5) – Thursday AM – Trimester 1
Coloring has many wonderful benefits that support emotional well-being and creativity. Coloring helps to improve focus, patience and attention. Students will engage in a variety of coloring and drawing activities in a calm and relaxing environment.

Pinbox3000 (Grade 3) – Thursday AM – Trimesters 1 & 2
Come design and build your own pinball machine! Students will construct a themed pinball machine to bring home and play with. Pinball machines will also be showcased at the SOCSD Maker Fair.

Science Symposium (Grades 3,4,5) – Friday AM – Trimesters 2 & 3
Explore all the science topics you have always been interested in but did not cover in science class! Students will explore their curiosities and choose topics to research and prepare presentations about.

Scooter Time (Grades 3,4,5) – Wednesday AM – Trimesters 1 & 2
Scooting comes with many health benefits, especially for kids as they learn and develop. Learning and developing a sense of balance is key to physical development.  Balance requires core muscle strength, propelling the scooter with the foot requires leg strength, and quick decision making skills require mental strength.

Soccer Enrichment (Grades 3,4,5) – Thursday AM – Trimesters 2 & 3
Students will participate in a soccer elective. Focus will be on skill development and game play.

Strength Training (Grades 3,4,5) – Tuesday PM – Trimesters 1 & 2
Fit kids build mental and physical strength. Students will use their body weight to build muscle and will use their minds to build mental perseverance. Students will engage in a variety of exercises that strengthen their core and allow them to perform at their best. The goal of this enrichment is not only to build strength but to build confidence as well.

Walking Club (Grades 3,4,5) – Tuesday AM – Trimesters 1 & 2
Walking is one of the easiest ways to help students incorporate exercise into their daily routine and create a lifelong habit. Walking is healthy, safe and an easy way to improve your health.

Grade 4

Chess Enrichment (Grade 4) – Wednesday AM – Trimesters 1, 2 & 3
Chess is open to all fourth graders, from those who have never played before to experienced Grandmasters–and everyone in between! Students battle on a weekly basis against each other in chess. Chess will meet every Friday morning that school is in session.

Do you love math challenges and are you willing to work hard to stretch your brain? Students will be taught various strategies to be successful in this problem solving competition where they compete against other teams across the country.

Students will participate in Cottage Lane PE’s favorite past time of Thunderball. Thunderball is cooperative-style action-packed game of team handball.

Volleyball (Grades 4 & 5) – Wednesday PM – Trimesters 2 & 3
The volleyball club is an opportunity for students with varying abilities to develop their skills in volleyball. We will have fun, be safe, and show good sportsmanship.

Walking Club (Grades 3,4,5) – Monday & Tuesday AM – Trimesters 1 & 2
Walking is one of the easiest ways to help students incorporate exercise into their daily routine and create a lifelong habit. Walking is healthy, safe and an easy way to improve your health.

Grade 5

Building a Remote Vehicle (Grade 5) – Monday AM – Trimester 2
Come and build a Remote Operated underwater Vehicle (ROV) and learn how these devices are used in ocean science and exploration. We will build our vehicles out of PVC pipe and try them out in the Middle School Pool. We will host one session in the Middle School Pool area at the end of the semester.

Chess Enrichment (Grade 5) – Friday AM – Trimester 3
Chess is open to all fifth graders, from those who have never played before to experienced Grandmasters–and everyone in between! Students battle on a weekly basis against each other in chess. 

Competition Chess (Grades 3,4,5) – Monday AM – Trimesters 1, 2 & 3
Students will prepare and participate in competitions outside of the school.

Competition Robotics (Grades 4 & 5) – Tuesday & Thursday AM – Trimesters 1, 2 & 3
In this program, a team of students will train and compete in a robotics meet later in the year. We will randomly select students in fourth and fifth grade for each day the enrichment is offered.

Continental Math League Competition (Grade 5) – Wednesday AM –  Trimesters 1 & 2
Do you love math challenges and are you willing to work hard to stretch your brain? Students will be taught various strategies to be successful in this problem-solving competition where they compete against other teams across the country.

Creative Crocheting (Grade 5) – Tuesday AM –  Trimester 1
Students will begin with basic crochet stitches and move on to more challenging projects. Crocheting can be enjoyed by all ages and specifically contributes to adolescent development and interests.

The CLE I RUN Running Enrichment is one such activity that will be offered this school year. The group is not just about running. That’s boring! This group will engage in fun-filled lessons and activities designed to help children make the connection between physical activity with a healthy lifestyle and a positive self concept.

Racquet Sports (Grade 5) – Thursday AM –  Trimester 2
Yes…that’s correct…CLE will have a table tennis club this year. Join this club to practice, compete and participate in match play. From beginners to advanced levels welcome.
