Part 2 of the Boxcar Children

Hello Boys and Girls!
I thought it would be fun to keep listening to The Boxcar Children. In our last reading Henry, Jesse, Violet and Benny were starting to make a home out of the boxcar. They also have a new member of the family-Watch the watchdog! This reading picks up right about where we left off. While you are listening remember to:
*Think about the “Big Ideas” or important parts of each chapter to help you keep track of what is happening in the story.
*Think about the character’s feelings-Do they change and how does this affect their actions?
*Make predictions about what you think will happen next in the story.
Ask someone in your family to listen along with you so you can have your own Book Talk!

Blizzard Boxes

This request may find you busy preparing for the upcoming holidays and sharing special celebrations with family and friends. It is our hope, however, that your family will reserve some time to help with our community service project.

Our community service activity this month is donating “Blizzard Boxes” to Meals on Wheels. We are welcoming Blizzard Boxes until Monday, December 16th. A Meals on Wheels representative will be joining William O. Schaefer for an assembly to personally receive the boxes and thank the SOCSD students for their kindness.

A BLIZZARD BOX is an assortment of donated non-perishable food items packed into shoeboxes. Refer to Blizzard Box Instruction to find out all the details, including the suggested foods. Please be sure to check product expiration date. NO fresh fruit or vegetables please!

Please wrap the lids separately from the boxes – wrap the top of the shoe box separately from the bottom of the shoe box (no boot boxes please) in grocery bag paper in order to make sure contents are easily accessible. Do not put any decorations on the box.

Students can use their imagination to draw pictures on the paper that senior citizens would enjoy receiving! The BLIZZARD BOXES will be delivered to the recipients of the Home Delivered Meals Program as a food source ahould the regular food deliveries be halted due to weather related or other emergencies.

For more information about Meals On Wheels and how you can help the Rockland County Community visit the Meals On Wheels website.

Please consider creating a BLIZZARD BOX with your family. Drop off your BLIZZARD BOX at William O. Schaefer (WOS), 140 Lester Drive, Tappan, New York between Tuesday, December 3th and Monday, December 16th.

Thank you in advance for giving so generously to the seniors in our community during this winter season.
Questions can be forwarded to hhill@socsd.org, ebarsanti@socsd.org, ccosgrove@socsd.org.

Earth Kids Club Promotes a Waste-Free Lunch

Can you please help the Earth Kids Club Promote 4 days of a Waste-Free Lunch, April 15th to April 18th?
Earth Day is a day that was created to promote awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s environment and occurs each year on April 22nd. The Earth Kids Club would like to make EVERY DAY an Earth Day!
In order to raise awareness about our cafeteria recycling program and to promote good habits, the Earth Kids Club is asking the WOS school community to join them in their efforts to reduce the amount of trash generated and going to the landfills by packing Waste-Free Lunches.
A Waste-Free Lunch is simply reducing the amount of trash generated. Waste-free lunch programs favor the use of reusable food containers, drink containers, utensils, and napkins. They discourage the use of disposable packaging, such as prepackaged foods, plastic bags, juiceboxes and pouches, paper napkins, and disposable utensils. ZERO WASTE is our goal!
Please join us every day next week, from Monday, April 15th to Thursday, April 18th and bring your Waste-Free Lunches to school!

Measurement Project

As a part of the Math Leadership Team, I was asked to try out a new measurement project with the class. For this project the children measured and recorded the height and width of a stuffed animal. Then we learned how engineers create a sketch of whatever they are trying to build in order to visualize it and make a list of parts they need for construction. Finally, we drew a sketch of a chair for our stuffed animal according to our measurements and created a materials list. Then it was time to BUILD!!!!
