Nature Walk and Playground Fun

It was the best day ever according the boys and girls.  We went for a nature walk to look for evidence that fall is here. The children saw the beautiful colors of the leaves on the trees.  We collected leaves, acorns, dried flowers and seedpods as our evidence.  Now we will write about the items in our collection in our new writing unit called "Looking Closely:  Observing, Labeling and Listing like Scientists".  The children had time for playground fun.  It was a great day!

Optimism Assembly

Today we went to our very first school assembly on our word of the month, "Optimism".  The children in Ms.Cassetta's and Mrs. Kuhn's classes shared with us what the word optimism means as well as what it means to be optimistic.  We heard the story, Pigs Can't Fly.  In addition, the classes sang a song to us.  It was a great assembly!DSC00666 (640x480) DSC00665 (640x480)DSC00667

STAR Class Event

We had our first "STAR" class event on Friday. The children have worked very hard the first couple of weeks of school learning how to be a "STAR" class.  The children have been earning marbles and filling our class bucket by Smiling, Thinking in a positive and flexible way, Always trying their best and Respecting one another.  Our class filled the bucket with 50 marbles on Thursday and earned a STAR event.  The children suggested several ideas for the event and then voted.  Toy day was the first winner the children brought their favorite toy to school. A great day was had by all!

Patriot Day

download (5)September 12th: We Knew Everything Would Be All Right

Heartfelt and touching book by 1st graders at Masterson Elementary School in Kennet, Missouri, about the day after the tragic events of September 11th. On September 11th horrific events occurred, yet through the simple text and vibrant art of first graders, we are reminded that the world continued the next day. On each page, children experience the comforts of ordinary routines, such as their teacher reading books to them, having homework and recess, and knowing that 2 + 2 still equals 4. This is a poignant message of hope that reassures us all that even after bad things happen, tomorrow always brings a new day.
