To Walk in the Shoes of Another

Cottage Lane has chosen to focus on fostering empathy in our school throughout the year. After reading the book of the month with a focus on empathy, our class engaged in an activity in which we explored what it might be like to be in another’s shoes. Students were selected to open shoe boxes and read letters about the struggles of the owners of each of the pairs of shoes and learn a bit of their backgrounds. The students then discussed why the individuals may have acted the way they did in the scenarios presented. We began to put ourselves in the shoes of others and understand why they may have made the decisions they made.

  1. F.Y.I. I wear a size ten shoe of my own, not Ms.O’Brien’s Husband’s shoes.*
