Ms. O’Brien’s and Mr. Krump’s classes took a field trip to Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, NY. During this field trip we learned about volcanoes from Professor Marc Spiegleman (Ms. O’Brien’s husband), earthquakes and tsunamis from Professor Felix Waldhauser and artic boreal ecology from Professor Natalie Boelman. We also went to the Tree Ring Lab and learned about coring trees to see how they age and to gather evidence of past climate. Finally, we went to the Mud Core Lab and learned about mud cores samples of very old mud from all over the world – especially from ocean floors. As a bonus, we got a piece of a tree core sample and a piece of a 110 million year old mud. We sure had fun while learning about the Earth System and the science performed at Lamont Doherty!
