TZHS Class of 2024 Salutatorian and Valedictorian

Drum roll, please… Tappan Zee High School proudly announces its Class of 2024 Valedictorian, Shayan Haque, and Salutatorian, Carol Daquilema!

“Shayan and Carol have demonstrated exceptional dedication, academic excellence, and leadership throughout their high school journey. On behalf of the students and staff at Tappan Zee High School, we are extremely proud of you! Congratulations on this wonderful accomplishment!” said Principal Melissa Luciano.

Shayan is Class President, Computer Science Club President, SO BOTZ Design Lead and four-year team member of SO BOTZ, as well as a member of the National, Computer Science and History honor societies. He intends to major in computer science at Johns Hopkins University.

Carol is a four-year veteran of the Leo Club, the group’s Vice President, as well as Co-President of the French Honor Society, Captain of the Math Team (which she first joined freshman year), an Area All-State and All County vocalist and member of Mu Alpha Theta and the National, English and Music honor societies. She is in the process of making her college decision.

After the announcement earlier this week, both seniors reflected on the most meaningful aspects of their high school experience.

For Shayan, it was the culture of community that he and fellow class officers worked to build coming through COVID. “Our class wasn’t together for most of freshman year, so we hit the ground running when we came back in person,” he explained. “We formed strong bonds because people wanted to be together and wanted TZ to be a better and more significant experience for all of us. Painting TZ rock last summer was symbolic and important for that reason.”

The highlights of Carol’s experience? “The passions I got to discover. I got involved with Leos freshman year and found that I really enjoy community service. I began music in middle school, but was really able to discover and improve my abilities in high school through Chorale,” she added. “I also appreciate the relationships that I’ve built with students and faculty here.”

Best of luck and congratulations, Shayan and Carol!
