On Friday, students from Cottage Lane Elementary School visited Tallman Mountain State Park as part of their annual outdoor education day!
The Earth Day inspired event is organized by CLE Technology teacher Jacob Tanenbaum and features various hands-on activities that aim to teach students about our local environment. This year, students rotated between stations hosted by volunteers and local experts from the Cornell Cooperative Extension, Veolia Water, Orange & Rockland, Lamont Doherty, Riverkeeper, the Rockland County Soil and Water Conservation District, Keep Rockland Beautiful, Rockland Green, the Turtles of Western Highway as well as a local beekeeper, CLE staff members and retired CLE teachers.
“I’m grateful to the entire Cottage Lane community for helping me organize this event every year as well as Clark Alexandre, the Tallman Park Manager who has extended his welcome to our school for many years,” said Tanenbaum. “It’s an opportunity to bring learning outside for all of the students in the school. Each scientist focuses on their area of expertise and they use the park as a teaching space. Kids learn best from what they can see and touch and that coupled with experts providing knowledge gives them first-hand knowledge of the world around them.”
