South Orangetown Central School District

The hallways at South Orangetown Middle School were buzzing with excitement last week as Cottage Lane Elementary School fifth graders toured the building and grounds as they prepare to begin sixth grade this September!

SOMS students, teachers and staff greeted the fifth graders with cheers and high fives as they got off the buses before current sixth graders partnered up with each fifth grade class to guide them on a tour to see the entire building including where most of their classes will be held during their first year at SOMS, as well as the gym, art and music rooms, the library and the playground. “We hope the incoming sixth grade students enjoyed their visit to SOMS! We are excited to welcome them in September! A big thank you to our staff and students that helped make the visit a success,” said SOMS Principal Chad Corey, Ed.D.

This visit is part of the year-long effort to help rising sixth graders with the transition from CLE to SOMS. Earlier this year, students visited SOMS to learn about the music and world language departments and last month, families had the opportunity to visit SOMS during the Incoming Grade 6 Family Orientation to tour the building and meet with Dr. Corey, SOMS Assistant Principal Danielle Rodriguez, Ed.D., sixth grade teachers and members of the SOMS Counseling Department. The next and final event aimed to help students adjust to middle school before September is Locker Day on Monday, August 28.
