2023 US Presidential Scholar candidate with Principal Arietta

Tappan Zee High School senior Matthew Tobin has been named a U.S. Department of Education 2023 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program candidate! Tobin is among the more than 5,000 candidates identified nationwide from the pool of nearly 3.6 million high school students expected to graduate in 2023. U.S. Presidential Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities. Applications are by invitation only.

“Matt has left his mark on TZ in so many ways,” noted Principal Rudy Arietta. “He has taken on leadership roles with the intent of making our school and community better. For him to be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education is a reflection of all of the work he has done over the past four years.”

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to recognize distinguished graduating seniors for their accomplishments specific to academic success, leadership and service. It was expanded in 1979 to recognize students demonstrating exceptional scholarship and talent in the visual, creative, and performing arts. In 2015, the program was expanded once again to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical fields.

Annually, up to 161 U.S. Presidential Scholars are chosen from among that year’s senior class. A distinguished panel of educators will review the 2023 candidate submissions and select approximately 600 semifinalists in early April. The Commission on Presidential Scholars will select the finalists, who will be announced by the U.S. Department of Education in May.
