2023 NYS 3-8 Assessments FAQ

The following set of frequently-asked questions and answers have been developed in an effort to explain the design, administration, results reporting for the New York State Grades 3-8 Assessments.

1. What are the New York State 3-8 Assessments?
These assessments were developed by the New York State Education Department to measure annual student progress in reading and math.

2. When will the 2023 New York State 3-8 Assessments take place?
The New York State ELA and Math assessments will be administered in a computer-based format to students in grades 3-8. The assessment dates are as follows:

Grade 3: ELA: April 25-26 | Math: May 8-9
Grade 4: ELA: April 21 & 24 | Math: May 4-5
Grades 5-8: ELA: April 19-20 | Math: May 2-3

3. What should parents know about the New York State 3-8 Assessments?

  • Assessments are two days
  • Assessments are untimed
  • All questions have been developed by New York State teachers
  • Assessment results are not linked to teacher and principal evaluations

Families are asked to have their children participate in these assessments and to encourage them to do their best.

4. When will parents receive the test results?
It is anticipated that the District will send home individual New York State Assessment reports in late August or early September by mail, dependent upon the New York State Education Department.

5. How does the school use the information from these assessments?
The NYS 3-8 Assessments are among the multiple measures of student performance, which help to inform instruction. Information from these assessments is used to guide instructional decisions, as well as to provide intervention services to students who qualify, based on strengths and weaknesses in targeted academic areas.
