Have you ever won a medal – for a great job, a sport, a painting? If you could win a medal, what would you work for? Every year since 1937, a beautifully illustrated picture book wins a Caldecott Medal, all thanks to a man named Randolph Caldecott! Some favorites that we all love have been winners of this great honor – Knuffle Bunny, Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, The Snowy Day, Owl Moon, Where the Wild Things Are! There is always a Caldecott Medal Winner who wins the gold medal, and then there can be up to five Caldecott Honor Winners who would win a silver medal.
Let’s look at the history and then check out some of the truly beautiful books that were nominated! Then we get to vote to pick our favorite!
If you want to, you can design your own medal!
