Earth Kids Club: Week 22, 5/29

Last week, Mrs. Bridges taught us how bees are essential to our environment…we learned so much! This week, we have another surprising environmental guest…a chicken farmer!

Raising chickens means more than fresh eggs every morning! Chickens poo….alot(my nephew raises chickens and told me so). They can poo up to 50 times a day! This time of year, many people pay good money for bags of poo or organic fertilizer. Organic fertilizer is free from the chemicals often found in manufactured fertilizers, but when you have chickens there is a constant supply of fertilizer! Chickens are omnivores, they eat bugs and plants, their manure is free of the diseases and bacteria found in the manure of meat consuming animals. Raising chickens on an organic diet also certifies that your fertilizer will also be free of any chemicals. Collecting and adding it to your garden beds and vegetable patches provides a brilliant range of nutrients for your plants. Raising chickens in a free range in your yard also means the grass will stay fertilized and healthy! If you’re all about sustainability and considering getting some new pets, raising chickens is the perfect choice..unless, like Ms. HIll,  there are fox near your back yard!

Chickens also help to control ticks and other pesky insects! Chicken flock patrol your yard! There food is insect pests and ticks! Scientific evidence suggests your chickens are more effective at tick and pest control than pesticides.

Watch the video below to learn how you can easily raise chickens in your backyard!

Lastly, Earth Kids will take The Last Plastic Straw Pledge, a commitment to refuse any plastic straws served with a beverage. This pledge advocates for restaurants to only provide straws upon request and adopt compostable or reusable straws. Everyone should persuade restaurants to take the pledge against straws!
