Dictionary Skills

A dictionary in 2018? Dictionaries can be used to check spelling, to learn new words, to find or double-check the meaning of a word you encounter, or to find the right word to use. I use mine every time I play scrabble with my husband!

How to best use a dictionary depends on what you are doing with words. A dictionary lists all the words in a language. It tells us about words. With a Dictionary, you can learn:

  • How to spell a word
  • What a word means
  • How to say a word
  • What part of speech a word is
  • How many syllables are in a word
  • Whether or not to capitalize a word
  • How to abbreviate a word (ex= USA)
  • Meanings of prefixes and suffixes for a word

There are a variety of dictionaries such as a visual or picture dictionary, Spanish dictionary, dictionary of snakes, dictionary of insects, as well as many others topic specific dictionaries.  This week in library, students will familiarize themselves with how words are organized, how to use guide words and how to decipher dictionary codes.

Circle the letter that comes first.

      1. K F  N
      2. B Z  L
      3. G S  E
      4. M W  T

If the first letter or letters in the word are the same, look to the next letter to decide which word comes first.  Let’s see if you can do it.

  • mane      Monday      mess
  • giraffe     gold        galaxy
  • spider      soldier     soccer
  • Lincoln    library    lipstick
  • apple    apricot     appliance
