I love reading nonfiction books and students love listening to them. We learn together about new people, animals, places or adventures and what we read often provokes interesting discussions.
Non-fiction picture books are an excellent way of introducing inspirational true-life characters who demonstrate optimism, courage, perseverance and determination. The pictures or illustrations in nonfiction books are often complex and convey meaning to what could otherwise be difficult to understand. By learning to how to use information presented in various types of nonfiction material, students will be prepared to use the multitude of expository texts that readers of all ages encounter daily, including newspapers, brochures, magazines, instruction manuals, recipes, and maps.
Children’s Books and Reading provides a wonderful list of nonfiction picture book titles. Enjoy!
