This morning, students and staff at William O. Schaefer Elementary School cheered as they welcomed bus drivers for a celebratory breakfast sponsored by the SOCES PTA. They were greeted by warm smiles and hand-written thank you cards from their passengers. “Our bus drivers have an important role here and we want them to feel like they are a part of this community,” said Principal Sheila Beglin.
Throughout the week, WOS invited bus drivers to participate in assemblies to review important bus safety rules with their respective riders. They also watched and discussed an educational video in which Assistant Principal Maggie White and students acted out different bus scenarios. “It’s important to always be reinforcing the rules and making sure that everyone knows what part they have to play,” explained Ms. White.
Administrators say that the goal of Bus Week is to provide opportunities for students to engage in meaningful conversations with their drivers in a setting other than the bus. Students, faculty and staff will revisit bus safety together again in January.
