William O. Schaefer Elementary School

Earlier today, members of the Blauvelt, Orangeburg, Tappan and Sparkill-Palisades fire departments teamed up to teach our elementary school students about fire safety.

The visits to William O. Schaefer Elementary School and Cottage Lane Elementary School are an annual National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) tradition that takes place during National Fire Prevention Month in October. The theme of this year’s national campaign is “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” Students were given instructions for the small, but meaningful, steps to take in the event of an emergency–like not hiding when firefighters come to the rescue. “We are only here to help you,” the firefighters explained. Students also had a chance to check out the professional equipment that firefighters use.

The Rockland County Department of Health’s Healthy Neighborhood Program (HNP) can help to ensure that your home is not only a safe place but a healthy one, too. For more information or to schedule a visit, call the HNP at (845) 364-3290 or (845) 364-3292. A brief home survey is required at the time of the visit.

All four of our local fire departments are recruiting volunteers, ages 16 and up! Interested? Please contact your local fire department. See more photos on Facebook!
