William O. Schaefer Elementary School

This morning, students at William O. Schaefer Elementary School kicked off “Global Read Aloud 2019” during Library Learning Lab with new Library Teacher Celine Zatarga. The program is aimed towards teaching children the importance of making connections and caring for one another.

Zatarga guided Kerry Anne Cassetti’s second-graders in an activity that prompted them to share their favorite places to visit or that they hope to visit. The group also read Yuyi Morales’ book, Dreamers, which recounts her journey with her young son from Mexico to the United States in search of a better life. Mother and son are able to make a home for themselves and discover a new, magical place: the public library!

For the final activity, students were asked to reflect on the gifts in their lives that they are grateful for and that help make the world a more beautiful place. “The great thing about this is that these ‘gifts’ take on different meanings,” said Zatarga. “Some students drew a picture of their families and others wrote about something they like to do.”

Global Read Aloud is also aligned with other WOS learning goals. “It ties into Character Education and the Teachers College Reading & Writing Project,” Zatarga added. “We are teaching our children to celebrate our differences, and to become critical thinkers, readers and writers.”
