In a coordinated effort with the district’s transportation department, William O. Schaefer Elementary School celebrated Bus Safety Week this week. “This is our first annual Bus Safety Week,” reported Principal Sheila Beglin. “It was a great opportunity to collaborate with Transportation and our drivers on promoting kind and safe bus behavior.”

Throughout the week, the school hosted assemblies for students and drivers, morning meeting lessons, classroom discussion, and staff ride-alongs to reinforce expectations for safe behavior and promote a positive bus riding experience for all. “Our Bus Safety Week campaign touched every student in their classrooms and through staff ride-alongs on their buses,” noted teacher and administration intern Beth Apicella. “It’s really helpful to have teachers on board to support and reinforce positive behaviors.”

The experience also had an impact on teachers. “It helped me feel connected with our students, our bus drivers and our community,” said Grade 2 Teacher Kerry Cassetti, who participated in a ride-along. “I was impressed that the bus driver knew his students and families so well and could tell how much care and concern he has for his riders.”

As a culminating event, Ms. Cassetti’s class lined the WOS entrance hallway this morning to give high-fives and applaud bus drivers as they arrived for the Bus Driver Appreciation Breakfast. Under the direction of Music Teacher Beth Fox, the students performed a song of thanks. “We’re thankful to our PTA for their generous support in providing breakfast for our bus drivers this morning,” said Ms. Beglin.
