Temperance Movement

Take a few moments to view the poster of former President, Teddy Roosevelt. This is a primary source (political cartoon) from the early 1900’s.

In the early 1900’s there was a movement to prohibit (end) the sale, production or consumption (drinking) of alcohol. 

Next answer the questions below based upon the primary source document.

  1. Theodore Roosevelt looks like he’s drunk, yelling or celebrating. Teddy is at a bar and there is cocktails behind him also in his hand there looks like there is a alcoholic drink in his hand so that’s why I think he is drunk. I personally think that Teddy was for alcohol like most people

  3. I notice that he’s making some sort of speech. They are selling non-alcoholic drinks. I think that he’s against the comsumtion of alcohol.

    Based on what I know I think teddy was for alcohol because he was selling cocktails and he had cups on the shelf that are used to drinking.

  6. I noticed that Teddy looks drunk because he has a bottle in his hand,is at a bar and it looks like he is acting crazy. Behind teddy they are selling drinks. Some drinks that they are selling are cocktails,milk and soda. Also on the shelves behind him there are cups or jars. I think that Teddy was for alcohol because he is drinking beer or a cocktail and in general looks very happy about being in a bar doing what he is doing.

  8. I think that Teddy Roosevelt is drunk, drinking a cocktail. If you see behind it, the store says there is milk, soda and teetotal cocktails. Cocktails have alcohol so this means might mean Teddy is supporting alcohol. If you look at it’s expression, you can see that he is enjoying himself.

  9. I think that he is drinking alcohol even he is not aloud because they made a law but people still do it. the sign says teetotal cocktails (big stick brand). I think that teddy is for alcohol because it is in his hand.

  10. What I notice about teddy in thais picture is that he is giving out a big speech to all the people around him. what the people are selling is cocktails soda and milk. I think teddy is for alcohol.

    2.) They are selling milk, soda and last but not least….. teetotal cocktails (big stick brand) which is alcohol.
    3.) I think he was for alcohol because he was holding a bottle which it looks like he was drinking it and he is next to a bar and place where they sell alcohol.

I noticed that Teddy put himself as a “rough rider” and also, by the way he said, “American Temperance Bar,” I think he was against the uses of alcohol,and for it, because It looked like he was fighting for the rights of alcohol. Behind him, I can see signs, like “Milk and soda for 1 dime,” and “Teetotal cocktails(Big Stick Brand).” Maybe he was showing everyone what he thought of the uses of alcohol. But MIlk and Soda aren’t alcohol, so he was probably fighting for what he thought of the relationship between Milk and Soda, with alcohol

  15. I notice that Teddy is yelling by the look of his face maybe because he is excided. I think he is for alcohol because he is the owner of the bar and selling the alcohol and they are selling milk and cocktails.

  23. In this poster it looks like Teddy was announcing something because he has his mouth open like he was ready to yell something or say something. Behind Teddy it says they are selling milk, soda, cocktails etc. I think Teddy was against alcohol because soda does not have alcohol in it neither does milk and i think cocktails don’t have it either.

I think that Teddy is for alcohol because in the picture he is holding a glass and in front of him it says American temperance bar kept by TEDDY.

    He is selling beer/cocktails.
    Teddy was for alcohol in the United States because the sign says ” American Temperance bar as like he is for the temperance movement he just wants to put laws on it.
    Kept by Teddy means he is for the sign and maybe got paid by the newspaper to right kept by Teddy.
