Thirty-one Tappan Zee High School AP Biology students and science teachers Brian Newburger and Nicole Farish participated in a five-hour Human Mitochondrial Sequencing lab at the Regeneron DNA Learning Center affiliated with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. “This lab experience gave students with an interest in biotechnology a great leap forward,” said Newburger.
Students utilized a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) machine to amplify DNA and performed a gel electrophoresis to help analyze mitochondrial DNA to determine evolutionary relationships. Students will further analyze their DNA sequences using an online bioserver. “It was fun and fulfilling to see our students so engaged in learning about and experiencing firsthand a few of the procedures involved in DNA technology,” Farish noted.
