Tappan Zee High School

Tappan Zee High School proudly announces that senior Hannah Ahn has been named a 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalist! “This is a tremendous honor for Hannah and a reflection of her hard work,” said Principal Rudy Arietta.

Of the more than 1.6 million juniors who took the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last fall, approximately 16,000–or one-third of the 50,000 high scorers–qualify as Semifinalists. Semifinalists are designated on a state-representational basis and represent the highest scorers in their respective states.

Over 90 percent of Semifinalists advance to Finalist status, and approximately 50 percent of Finalists ultimately are awarded a National Merit Scholarship. To become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must submit an essay and scholarship application which includes information about their school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment and recognition earned. Semifinalists must have an outstanding academic record and be recommended by a high school official.

Congratulations and good luck, Hannah!
