Competitions

Unfortunately due to our current situation we are not participating in a Science Olympiad competition this year.  INSTEAD we are going to act as more of a science club providing opportunities to participate some great STEM activities that were events in prior years events.

About Competitions:

  • We compete in Division B (Middle School) in the Lower Hudson Region of New York State.
  • We compete at an Invitational Competition and a Regional Competition.
  • Our Invitational this year is February 3rd, 2018
  • The regional competition is held March 3rd,  2018 at Scarsdale Middle School in Westchester County. (We are hoping to do well enough at Regionals to qualify for the State Competition)
  • This year’s coaches are: Mrs. Nybro, Mr. Chugranis, Mrs. Beckman and Mrs. Levine
  • Meetings are held every Tuesday and some Wednesdays in room 186 (Mr. Goldstein’s room).
  • Anyone can join the SOMS Science Olympiad Club, but only 15 people will make the Regional Competition Team. Being a SOMS Science Olympiad Club member does not guarantee competing at Regionals.
  • We are hoping to have 2 teams this year, which would allow for up to 30 team members, so please encourage your friends to join!

Preparing for competition:

  1. Always sign the attendance sheet when you stay for Science Olympiad and to keep a journal as you prepare for events.
  2. Spend time each week working on your events. Don’t try to cram in all of your studying at the last minute, and don’t try to build a whole new device at the last minute either.
  3. Only 15 people will make the Regional Competition Team so team members MUST be willing to study for and compete in multiple events!
  4. Your coaches have copies of the official rule book. You must thoroughly review the rules and guidelines for your events! You should pay close attention to the details to prevent disappointment at the competition. Students who don’t follow the rules and guidelines exactly are disqualified or receive a penalty, especially in building events.
  5. If more than two people work on or study for an event, an in-school competition will be held closer to the competition date to determine the two who will compete. Remember no event is closed out to anyone, and your coaches make the final decision of who competes based on both effort and performance.
