SOMS teachers Mrs. Suzanne Mantin and Mrs. Lisa Rogo’s 6th grade math classes took part in an Hour of Code on December 9th and 10th.  Hour of Code is a Global Movement that takes place  December 7-13, 2015  during Computer Science Education Week.  It gives students and adults a one hour introduction to Computer Science to help take the mystery out of coding while at the same time encouraging students to write code and think about a career in Computer Science.  Mrs. Mantin’s classes were joined by Margaret McGlynn-Cook, Technology Director at CNBC, who came to talk to the students about coding.   Students in all classes had fun using code to create games in Star Wars, Frozen, and Minecraft among others.  Three of the students announced they were going to start their own technology company and said “Lightbot was their favorite because it was fun and challenging”.    After trying Hour of Code at school, one of the students announced,  “I went home, coded a Star Wars game on my computer and then transferred it to play on my phone.” Any one of any age can try an hour of code by going to www.code.org.   Happy Coding!
