On March 16, over 200 SOCSD grade K-12 students gathered in the TZHS Auditorium to showcase the Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math projects and experiments they have been working on over the course of this school year. Students worked on the projects in class, on their own, and through various extracurricular activities and academic teams producing the following: 3-D Printing; Makey Makey; littleBits; Scratch; SOMS Challenge Lab; Math Counts; Math Olympiad; Project Lead the Way; Science Olympiad; Science Research, SOMS Challenge Lab; CLE Robotics Teams; SOMS Robotics Club; and Zee-TV – TZHS Television Studio.
For years, SOCSD students have been involved in curricular and extra-curricular activities spanning all disciplines of science, technology, engineering, art and math. Unfortunately, much of their work goes unnoticed by fellow students and the general public. This event gives students the opportunity to share their passions with the whole community.
This year, SOCSD re-launched the previously designated STEAM Expo as the newly named SOCSD School Maker Faire to connect students with the world-wide maker movement. Testament to SOCSD’s commitment to providing all students the opportunity to create and innovate are the MakerSpaces in each of the four SOCSD school buildings. SOCSD recently hosted teachers from all over Rockland County in the TZHS MakerSpace where they discussed all the resources needed to make this a successful initiative for all students in all schools.
Part of the mission of the Maker Faire is to showcase student-created works that employ “critical thinking — critical making,” the constant dialogue between eye, mind, and hand.
