This summer, Microsoft’s Xbox team acquired Beam, an interactive, livestreaming platform for gamers launched by 18-year-old Matt Salsamendi. On Thursday, the developer spoke with SOMS Challenge Lab students from Microsoft headquarters via Google Hangouts.

The desire to play Minecraft with friends inspired Matt to start his first business–Minecraft server hosting–the summer after sixth grade. He discussed the hard work and immense time commitment required to grow a successful company.

“Matt spoke about the importance of supporting students with ‘specialized interests,'” said Challenge Lab teacher Mr. Andrew McIntosh, who organized the event. “It’s something that we do by providing opportunities in Challenge Lab and in makerspaces throughout SOCSD. We’re very grateful to Matt for taking the time to speak with our students.”
