The current members of the SOMS National Junior Honor Society welcomed eighty-eight new seventh grade members on May 9th at the Induction Ceremony held in the SOMS Auditorium.    This year the eighth grade members of the South Orangetown Middle School Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society raised money for The Jimmy Hauburger Memorial Foundation.  After discussing it and taking a vote, the members of the NJHS decided on focusing all of their efforts on this singular charity this year.  In May, the members of the NJHS and its advisors, Carol Fagan and Kristine Condon, presented representatives from the Jimmy Hauburger Memorial Foundation with a check in the amount of $2,439.58.

During the Ceremony, representatives from the specific service groups spoke about how they raised money for this year’s cause.  To make it all the more special, Ann Marie Tromer, Jimmy Hauburger’s aunt, came to speak on behalf of the organization.  To introduce the inductees to the code by which they will be expected to live both in and out of school, the student members of the NJHS Executive Committee spoke in detail about the Honor Society’s five pillars: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, Citizenship, and Character. Finally, the inductees were recognized individually and welcomed into the National Junior Honor Society upon recitation of the Honor Society Pledge.  It was a year of achievement followed by a night of celebration with many new inductees ready and eager to take over as full-fledged members and give their service to the community, as the class before them.
