This year, the South Orangetown Middle School National Junior Honor Society, with help of the advisors, Carol Fagan and Kristine Condon, have been hosting a series of fundraisers to support the Jimmy Hauburger Memorial Foundation. This local charity, in memory of a Tappan Zee High School student, works to raise awareness and offer support for teen issues including bullying and thoughts of suicide. On March 18, 2016 during the second half of lunch, SOMS students and teachers successfully culminated one of their fundraising efforts by celebrating with the third annual Pie in the Face Competition.
For 4 weeks leading up to the event, each grade competed against the other grades to raise the most money by bringing in monetary donations of any amount to their homeroom teachers. Each grade worked to meet or beat two goal amounts. Upon raising the first goal amount of $75.00, one teacher volunteer from that grade will get pied in the face. Upon reaching the second, higher goal of $125.00, that grade would have the opportunity to pie two teacher volunteers. The sixth grade students happily pied their teachers, Mr. Rob Calone and Mr. Eric Goldstein, and then were surprised by a last minute volunteer, Mrs. Pam Tarrasco. The seventh graders got to pie both Mrs. Andrea Fortuno and Mr. Andrew McIntosh, and the eighth graders got to pie Mr. Matthew Fisher and Mr. Ron Scherer! To sweeten the pot further, the grade that raised the most money overall got the opportunity to pie both the Dean of Students, Mr. Dan Sullivan the Vice Principal, Dr. Chad Corey. All three grades exceeded the top goal and raised an overall total of $895.00. Because of how well the students did at fundraising for this important local cause, Mr. Sullivan and Dr. Corey allowed students from all three grades to pie them.
This was a very successful fundraiser for an important local cause, and an enjoyable way for students, teachers, and administration to spend part of a Friday afternoon.
