Recently, students in Mr. Amandola’s class connected with a class via Skype from Sully, Iowa. The purpose of the lesson was to exchange ideas revolving around how September 11th impacted communities across the nation, regardless of location. Students shared their personal stories about how September 11th impacted them and talked about community heroes, such as Dennis McHugh and Welles Crowther. Students in Iowa shared how September 11th was a significant event for their community, despite living in a different region of the United States.
Mr. Amandola’s students discussed items they felt represented New York State, such as Playbills from Broadway, information about the New NY Bridge and a special lacrosse helmet dedicated to Welles Crowther. Students also talked about what their school life is like, sharing what they enjoy about being a middle school student. The students from Iowa discussed being a part of the Future Farmers of America, a program that none of the students here in New York had ever heard of.  They talked about how they participate in state fairs and create projects that integrate science,  farming and agriculture.
This was a great learning experience for all of the students involved and both Mr. Amandola and Mr. Johnson’s classes are looking to exchange ideas again in the future regarding important events in our history.
