SOMS Announcements

Attention All Students:  If the temperature is between 21 and 45 degrees you MUST have a minimum of either a sweatshirt or fleece jacket to go outside for recess.  If the temperature drops below 21 degrees, there will be no outdoor recess.  Please remember to bring your jacket to recess if you want to go outside.

 As a reminder, if an extended absence (2 or more days due to illness) is anticipated, please call the Guidance Office at (845) 680-1106 to request assignments.  In case of a brief period of absenteeism, you should contact a classmate and /or check the teacher websites.

Attention All Athletes:  As a reminder each day of tryouts or practice please report immediately to the cafeteria upon dismissal.

Are you interested in learning more about: American Popular Music, The Space Station Academy (NEW!), Oceanography, the Teenage Brain, Learning to invest in the stock market, Advanced English Literature, Poetry Writing, Fantasy and Science Fiction Short Stories, Literacy Skills for the 21st Century, Web Design, Number Theory, Psychology, Sociology, Meteorology, Mythology and even more?  Registration is now open for the 2017 Spring Term for The Virtual High School (VHS)!   Our Spring Semester begins January 25, 2017.  Please contact your student’s guidance counselor or Mr. Yassky.

SOMS is looking for a talented 6^th or 7^th grade student to design the cover of next year’s Agenda Book!  The theme for this year is our “4 C’s” of communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity.  Submissions (on an 8 ½ by 11 piece of paper) are due to the main office by today, Friday, December 9^th.

The NJHS is working with the Legacy X Foodbank to collect food for those in need.  There will be a box in the main lobby, and we are asking you to bring in canned/boxed goods to help local families.  We will be running the food drive through December 22^nd and a full wish list of food will be posted outside Mrs. Fagan’s and Ms. Condon’s classrooms, as well as on the collection box. Thank you for your generosity!

There will be an information meeting for students interested in auditioning for the CAST of Bye Bye Birdie on December 21^st after school in the auditorium. Please bring a pen or pencil. Please make every effort to attend as all the audition information you need will be given at this time.

The National Junior Honor Society is hosting Spirit Week from December 12^th through December 16^th.  Students in all grades are invited to participate.  Students have to donate at least $1 a day, or $5 in the beginning of the week, to be able to earn points for their class. The class with the most points at the end of the week will earn a breakfast party.

Monday will be Pajama Day

Tuesday will be Sports Day

Wednesday will be Disney Day

Thursday will be Throwback Day

Friday will be Class Color Day (6^th grade: Green, 7^th grade: Red, 8^th grade: Blue)

SOMS Guidance Alert: The SOMS Guidance Department will be running a family changes group for 6^th, 7^th and 8^th grade students. The purpose of this group will be to help students cope with the grief and stress of divorce and/or separation.  If any student could benefit from this group, please contact Mr. Farrugia.  The group will run 6-8 weeks during the school day and is projected to start the week of December 12^th.

During the week of December 19^th to December 23^rd, the SADD club will be hosting “Remember to Care Week.”  This is a week to raise awareness about being kind to others and treating people the way you want to be treated.  The SADD club has an event for each day of the week.
