The South Orangetown Middle School Science Olympiad competed in the Sacred Heart University Invitational on January 25…and Emma V. and Ian G. placed first in the “Write-It/Do-It” event! “Write-It/Do-It” reinforces computer science concepts, including explicit and thorough programming and debugging. One partner must write a description of an object and how to build it; the other attempts to construct the object from their partner’s description.
“We have a very young team,” noted K-5 Instructional Science Coach Samantha Levine, who co-advises the team with SOMS science teacher Sara Nybro. “11 of our team members are new to Science Olympiad, so we used this small invitational (just 16 events) as an opportunity for them to gain competition experience before the March regional. It’s a growth year, so we’re working on helping team members understand the dynamics of competition, such as how to use the spec sheet and cheat sheets to your advantage. Members can’t rely on these tools, so they have to figure out what information is important enough to memorize.”
Science Olympiad enables students to challenge themselves by exploring new topics or delving deeper into those they have covered in the classroom. and push themselves. South Orangetown students may participate in Science Olympiad at both SOMS and Tappan Zee High School.
