This morning, South Orangetown Middle School honored and bid farewell to 252 eighth-grade students at its annual Moving Up Ceremony. The SOMS Band performed “Pomp and Circumstance,” “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag” under the direction of retiring Music Teacher Janice Tocco.
Class President Liam Boyle addressed his peers and recalled his memories of Cottage Lane Elementary School Paul Doctor encouraging students to be active learners. “As we enter the high school, we’ll keep expanding our knowledge and friendships,” he said.
Principal Dr. Chad Corey described some of the many collective academic achievements of the outgoing eighth-grade class, including: 95 percent of the class earned a high school credit in world language, 43 percent of the class was inducted into the National Junior Honor Society, 46 percent earned a high school credit in either Studio Art or Design, Drawing and Production, 36 percent took Algebra Honors and passed the Regents (with an average score above mastery), and 61 percent took Earth Science and passed the Regents (with an average score above mastery). “We want you to be the Superheroes of your generation. The most important superhero powers are ones that you already have…being kind to and caring about other people,” he noted. “ We want all of you to know, with 100 percent certainty, that we, the staff at SOMS, have always believed and will continue to believe in each and every one of you. Each of you has the talent, ability and skills necessary to make a positive impact in the world.”
Following the presentation of special awards, Dr. Corey formally presented the incoming Tappan Zee High School freshmen to Principal Dr. Jennifer Amos. “What an impressive, talented group! Welcome, Class of 2023. It’s going to be a great ride!”
