South Orangetown Middle School

At its May 21 meeting, the Board of Education appointed Joseph Onativia as Assistant Principal for South Orangetown Middle School, where he has served in an interim capacity since July 5, 2018.

Mr. Onativia holds a Bachelor of Science degree in history from SUNY Oneonta, a Master of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Johnson State College, and a Certificate of Advanced Study from Manhattanville College. Since joining the South Orangetown Central School District in 2005, he has served as a fourth-grade teacher at Cottage Lane Elementary School, an Instructional Literacy Coach for grades K-5, a lead for the districtwide K-12 ELA and Social Studies Leadership Teams, and coach for JV football and lacrosse. Previously, he taught fourth grade for three years at a public school in the Bronx.

“It has been an exciting year at SOMS and I look forward to building on the journey we’ve begun with our remarkable faculty, student body and community,” said Mr. Onativia.

“We are excited to have Mr. Onativia as our assistant principal at SOMS!” remarked Principal Dr. Chad Corey. “He is a dedicated, talented and compassionate instructional leader focused on developing the whole child, which is central to our work here.”
