South Orangetown Middle School

Fourteen Tappan Zee High School seniors were awarded scholarships at the Loggia Giovanni da Verrazzano No. 1236 Order Sons of Italy in America’s 31st Annual Italian Honor Roll Induction and Scholarship Award Ceremony last night. Forty-eight South Orangetown Middle School eighth-graders and 136 TZHS students earned certificates of merit for earning an average of 90 or above in Italian language coursework; of these, 48 were 2018 Italian Language and Culture Honor Roll inductees for achieving an average of 90 or above over four years of study.

“It’s very rewarding to see our students recognized for their good, hard work,” noted TZHS World Language teacher Maria Bruno.

The ceremony was emceed by the Sons of Italy Scholarship Chairman Joseph Stilo and included remarks from President Rocco Trentinella, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert Pritchard and Rockland County Executive Ed Day.

In his brief address, Dr. Pritchard reflected on the historical significance of the school district’s Italian language program. “So many of us in this community can trace our lineage back to Italy and we look forward to continuing to offer this rich, robust programming for students,” he said. “You have made us proud.”

Mr. Day commended students on “keeping Italian heritage alive” through their pursuit of excellence in studying Italian language and culture and said, “Thank you to our scholarship winners for giving Rockland County a moment of pride we can reflect upon.”

The TZHS scholarship winners are: Joseph Breen, Catherine Cusack, Jennifer Domenick, Casey Hampton, Anafrancesca Impeduglia, Alexandra Kopac, Katelyn Lange, Tara Mercer, Catherine O’Kelly, Samantha Pepe, Karli Santoro, Toniann Talone, Alexandra Thomas, and Elizabeth Tompkins.
