South Orangetown Middle School

Eighth-grader Grace T. was nominated as South Orangetown Middle School’s New York Jets Upstander of the Week by her teachers, who wrote: “Grace is an amazing young girl who always has a smile on her face and goes out of her way to be kind to others. She always shows respect to her peers and respect for her teachers. Grace brings a cheerfulness to the classroom which rubs off on her fellow classmates, making the learning experience positive. In the classroom, she is willing to tackle all tasks and gives 100 percent effort.”

“I have been working hard and helping people,” Grace said, noting that she appreciated the Upstander recognition. “It does mean a lot to me. It makes me feel special.”

In addition to school-wide recognition over the public announcement system, Grace received a Jets Tackle Bullying t-shirt and three tickets and a parking pass for the October 21 Jets vs. Vikings game. Congratulations, Grace!

SOMS Upstander of the Week Grace T. and school administrators

For the second consecutive year, South Orangetown Middle School is participating in the New York Jets Upstander of the Week Program, a collaboration with STOMP Out Bullying, to highlight students across New York, New Jersey and Connecticut who create a positive school culture.  Upstander candidates are nominated by their teachers for taking a stand against bullying, reaching out to students who may be socially isolated, and/or promoting a school culture that honors diversity. All grade levels at SOMS participate.
