In observance of National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month, South Orangetown Middle School is uniting with school communities across the U.S. to raise awareness of, and educate about, bullying prevention.
Today, in honor of Stomp Out Bullying Day, the SOMS staff and student community wore blue to demonstrate that they stand together against bullying. Throughout the month, students will be engaging in classroom discussions about creating a positive, welcoming school culture. National Junior Honor Society members created anti-bullying messages and posters which line the hallways. Studio Art students submitted wing designs for a contest sponsored by the Art Department, inspired by artist Kelsey Montague’s What Lifts You campaign. Students will vote to determine the winning design and the winning artist will have the opportunity to create a wings mural in the building. The SOMS Art Club also created What Lifts You posters which feature Post-It notes listing things that make them happy, which are hung throughout the school.
“SOMS is excited to participate in this month-long event,” said Principal Dr. Chad Corey. “It is important to us, as a staff, that we model and teach students respectful, empathetic behaviors. This emphasis on developmental responsiveness–standing up for what’s right–aligns with the National Schools to Watch rubric and is a key part of the culture we are creating here.”
