These definitions support understanding parts of a story. They will be used throughout the year.
Vocabulary List for Parts of a story
- Theme- a message or word that can sum up the story. Most common themes are friendship, survival, struggles with conflicts
- Setting-the location of the story; often there is more than one setting
- Plot- the events that occur in chronological order; beginning, middle and the end
- Climax- the turning point of the story
- Genre- type of book
- Resolution- how the problem is solved NOT always the ending
- Conflict- a tension that exists between the characters
- Events- the facts from the story that make up the plot
- Characters- the people or animals that the story is about
- time- all stories take place over a period of time
