Dr. Suess’ Birthday!

dr-seussDr. Seuss (Dr. Theodor Geisel) was born over 100 years ago on March 2nd.

Children always enjoy listening to bouncy rhythms and reciting catchy rhymes. By reading and listening to stories and poems with rhythms and rhymes, we explore how language and sounds work. This helps us to develop our vocabulary, memory, and concepts of writing. Listen to the story, There’s a Wocket in my Pocket.

Even though the Dr. Seuss used silly, meaningless words, why were we able to understand their meanings? silly, or made up, rhyming words are often used to construct poems. Read “Jabberwocky” by Lewis Carroll and “Bleezer’s Ice Cream” by Jack Prelutsky. Try to write your own silly poem.

Celebrate Dr. Seuss in Seussville where you can play variety of games and activities, and find information about favorite Seuss characters.

  1. Dr. Suess’s story books are fun and amazing. I enjoyed There’s a Wocket in my Pocket! and Suessville. I wonder what the world would be like without Dr. Suess’s funny children’s books.

  2. This is my silly poem I hope its silly enough… Fairy bear loves to scare the little kids at the fair but that’s to mean so now he cant do it anywhere

  3. HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR. SEUSS!!! Dr. Seuss is a great children’s book author!!!
I bet without Dr. Seuss, children wouldn’t be able to read at such an early age. I bet in all of Dr. Seuss’ books, there are life lessons. Even if some 4th graders or even ADULTS can’t find them!!

  4. I wonder how Dr. Seuss got all the names from and how he puts it into a children’s rhyming book, or how long does it take to publish one book?
    HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR. SEUSS!!

  5. I think without Dr.Seuss and his funny books kids don’t get as exited about reading but when you joyful times like snuggling up on the couch on Christmas Eve to watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas or sitting next to your best friend to read Green Eggs and Ham and get the giggles some kids think that that’s what reading is like and they are right reading is a journey souring thru your book searching for Neverland or running thru your book as your class slipper falls of and the clock strikes midnight like Cinderella that is what reading is like!

  6. I forgot to say it then but Happy Birthday Dr.Seuss. He had other pen names such as Theo LeSieg and Theophrastus Seuss. I think it is cool how he used fake words and you can use the pictures and other words to find out what he means.
