Last night I briefly mentioned growth vs. fixed mindsets.  This idea stems from psychologist Carol Dweck's research from her book titled Mindset: The New Psychology of Success.  She examines the properties of the fixed and growth mindsets and their effects in a variety of different fields (school, sports, etc.)

Here is a brief video discussing the effect of praise on mindsets:

Growing up, I think I believed in a fixed mindset.  This proved for some challenging times around high school math and science courses.  However, as an adult and an educator, I believe and see the power and possibility of the growth mindset.  It is essential that we teach children how to cope with obstacles and turn "failure" into an opportunity to learn and grow.  We know that persistence is one trait of "successful" people.  Here are two videos that highlight basketball superstar Michael Jordan's failures and persistence and dedication.

I am very curious to do more research about this topic.  What are your thoughts about the fixed and growth mindset concept?  Which mindset describes you (or your child/ren)?  Has your mindset changed over time?  If so, how?  I look forward to reading your responses!
